The RIFT is a great shoe, but I’m a little disappointed that there’s not an extra eyelet (or better laces) for better lock-down over the top. Buyer beware: this will fit more like the Peregrine 13 than the “ultra” line of Xodus Ultra (1 or 2) and it certainly won’t give you the toebox room of the Edge. So it’s a bit too tapered or my liking on the toe medial side. Other than that, it is more stable than the Edge, and it certainly is fun to bomb up and down descents, good on single track. I worry the outsole is wearing too quickly if you have any pavement/concrete in your way before you get to trail but hey… can’t have everything. A really solid first edition of the Rift – just give us a BIT more toeroom, SAUCONY, on v2.

They fit as expected when you look at these. A glove like fit around the ankle and forefoot, and a splay for your toes in the front. The foam is comfortable and responsive. You know the rock plate is there but, it disappears like the lugs when you are out and about. They are also super light weight, so they just sort of disappear on foot. First time out, 8 mile trek over some medium rocked surfaces, heavily rooted areas, and these just glided right over them. If you like your hiking shoes to fit like a sock, while still giving you some of the fun from Saucony’s road shoes, this new model is a slam dunk.

They finally did it, guys. This is essentially a premium, ultra-distance Peregrine. Think the Peregrine outsole with the sock-like upper of a Brooks Catamount (arguably the best upper in all of trail running) with the foam of the Endorphin Speed. Once you get the lockdown figured out (highly suggest a runner’s knot), the use cases for this shoe are endless. I’ve been running Sauconys (among many other trail brands) for a LONG time and this shoe is truly a triumph (pun intended). Shoutout to the product managers that put this thing together, it is a staggering achievement in design and execution and I can’t wait to crush more trail miles in these!

Ethos: 2:55 marathon, 10K 32:49, and I work at a running shoe store as an outfitter. I spend most of my time on the trails, though, and specifically enjoy running up mountains the most.
I bought this shoe for a fire-road race that I ended up getting 2nd place in. The midsole and outsole unit work perfectly on fire roads, soft and steep singletrack, and even on road if you need it to (although they will wear out very quickly). They are not particularly great at rocky terrain. I took them up and down Mt. San Gorgonio (20 miles, 4700ft gain) and they were incredibly comfortable the entire way, besides when the trail was all rocks and my feet were sliding around due to the limited number of eyelets. This is pretty much the biggest downfall of the shoe: the eyelet chain. Not only do they not go down far enough in the forefoot to give you a really secure feeling on technical terrain, the tongue does not have enough padding where you would want it to make the upper feel nice and secure on your foot. In the next version, keep the midsole and outsole unit, and give it a more padded tongue. Get rid of the stupid pull tab, and maybe shave off a half mil off the lugs to bring the weight back down. For what this shoe is, the lugs seem a little too big, but I did welcome that on really steep (45% and loose) trails.
Fit wise, it has a very secure heel for a narrower foot, average width in the midfoot and ball of the foot, and a slightly narrow toebox. That is another gripe I had. It took about 50 miles for my baby shaped feet to stretch out the big toe area for it to feel really comfortable. The fit in general seems very similar to the Endorphin Pro 3, but with a toecap. Because of the toecap, the shoe feels slightly short, so if length can be an issue in your size, and you have a wider foot, go half size up.
Durability wise, 77 miles in the outsole looks great. Unfortunately, one of the plastic eyelets near the top has already started to tear. I had only owned the shoe for less than a month. Because of this, I had to slightly change my lacing method. I can foresee this totally tearing at some point in the next month or so.

Love this shoe! With the sock like fit and lightweight feel, one barely knows it’s there. A speedy comfortable shoe.

This is a great trail shoe. The fit is perfect and the pwrrun foam gives just enough spring to make these a tremendous trail shoe over all terrain.

Saucony is on the right track with this one. A bit more pop and the Rift will be a top trail shoe. Good grip and plenty of toe box room. I’ll save five stars for the Rift2.
JRH –
Fun, comfortable ride over rocky trails. I was worried the midsole would be too soft but it feels protective without being unstable.

The RIFT comes really close to being the perfect trail shoe, save for 2 features that are odd even for Saucony:
1. It’s a bit short and tapered in the toebox, even more than the Peregrine 13s (also have those) and nowhere near the space in the toebox of the Xodus Ultra (1 or 2), and way tighter than the Saucony Edge. Also, feels about 2 eyelets short on the lacing system to do a proper lockdown, and the ankle cuff near the heel could use some work as I feel after a while on trail (anything longer than 18 miles). So, thought this would be my dream Ultra-shoe of choice for 50k-100 mile distance, but those 2 features (eek) and the lack of drainage features hold it back for me, training only. But the PBx foam in this is great, and it IS much more stable than the Edge over cambered or techinical terrain; mild nylon rock plate works pretty well and I can bomb up and down hills, but I have to really lube my toes and use toe-socks to avoid blisters.

I’ve used this for east coast trail running, including a 22-mile, 9,000′ vert day. Fantastically comfortable. The PWRRUNPB feels a tad too firm for my liking when compared to last year’s Xodus Rift or the Endorphin Pro 3, but does have that great light and responsive feel. In a perfect world I’d shape a millimeter or two off the lugs. Otherwise, stupendous.

This shoe does alot right. Lightweight, fast, durable, and fun! BUT there are some drawbacks that are pushing me to the Saucony Edge. The Rift has a quite firm mid/forefoot (due to plastic speed roll plate maybe?) and also the toe box curves up which is putting strain on my calves and ankles. The firm feel is perhaps due to the new rugged/durable outer and bottom which perhaps is needed for a durable trail shoe. I would definetly consider these a stable shoe. Perhaps too stable for me actually. I felt the Edge were more comfortable, nimble and faster for me.

This shoe wants to go fast, and is also great for slow paces too.

Long live Powerrun PB midsole!! It truly is a whole new and superior running experience vs EVA foam. Zero loss of a perfect cushioning/energy return balance on a 5-hour mountainous run on very rocky rooty and steep terrain. This shoe is LIGHT and FAST, though I’m a slog-it-out steady-Eddy ultrarunner who no longer focuses on “time”. (aaah, those painful and awful “PR”-obsessed days of my youth) But alas, it seems like the engineers completely got rushed and simply skipped over the front of this shoe! Like another brand putting super foam in their shoes, 100% of the attention on foot lockdown and security has been placed in the heel and back of the foot, leaving no structure or great lockdown in the front of the foot! Brands born of mountain running legacy have 1 or more forefoot overlays – as SO many runners (trail more so than road IMO) land on the forefoot and run steep vertical such that they to keep the forefoot from sloshing around, and to prevent injury. So, given the surprisingly small number of lace holes and lack of forefoot overlays/structure, I did away with the insole and cut out a piece of it to cover the top of my foot under the tongue. This gives me adequate lockdown such that I can clamp the laces down tight enough, and makes my foot lower to the ground which for me is safer for downhills. Hey, Killian’s shoe brand has no insoles and he claims it lowers the chance of blisters etc. Next to the INCREDIBLE midsole, I can’t imagine that a few mm of EVA foam insole would be adding anything. I plan on swapping in more ropy HQ laces, which should really help. For version 1 this shoe is really really good, and I’ll likely buy another pair as they are perfect cushion, energy return, and stack height for anything up to a 200 miler; while still so light and fast for shorter runs. The outsole has been fantastic with no signs of wear after 40 miles, but just hope it is durable given how durable the Powerrun PB midsole will be compared to traditional foam. Super shoes like this should have even longer lugs for this reason, remember folks that every time we run the lugs get shorter. Finally, I do wish the front of the shoe were wider but there is a VERY key feature to counteract this. If you look down while wearing them you can see that the midsole/outsole under the front of the upper really provides a wider foundation – especially outside the 5th toe! This is KEY, because it will discourage your foot from rolling inward, making the dreaded ankle sprain/fracture less likely. The Endorphin Edge did not have this wide mid/outsole base on the outside of the forefoot, which made it a big risk for an ankle inversion for me. GREAT shoe, please make version 2 with more lace holes, wider forefoot, and a tiny bit of forefoot structure for lockdown there. With those it would be the absolute king of mountain ultra running shoes,

I bought this shoe that was recommend to me by a friend in our golf group. A great fit and good support. Well made.

I’ve purchased Saucony’s since 2020 and can’t be happier. The Kinvara Liberty is awesome and I should have gotten another pair but now that I reside in Portugal it’s not available here. Thanks so much for being a quality name and running shoe!
Davew –
Great Shoes! Loving the cushioning of the PWRRUN PB, a slight SPEEDROLL, and PWRTRAC to keep me on track. One warning…My pair ran about 1/2 inch short.
Machina –
The best trail running shoes that I’ve tried so far. I still love Peregrine. They’re like iconic shoes. I compare every trail running shoes to them. But Rift just doesn’t have any flaws. I run very technical trails and big mileages (10-15) Rift can handle it very easy, comfortable and with style. They also looks gorgeous.

Feels similar to my speed 3’s and Pros. I really enjoy the grip on this shoe
Easyco506 –
Fast and light. Ran in soft to muddy dirt and loose debris. Excellent grip and comfort. Nice toe gaurd for rocks and roots. Definetly gonna race 100k in these and use them at Western States.

A very good shoe. Love the cushion and the look. It’s like a softer Peregrine in some ways. The fit is great, width is decent, similar toe box to the peregrine. My only gripe is the lacing system. It’s hard to get a locked down fit across the lower section. Almost a perfect shoe.

I really love this shoe, except for one thing…
This is my 3rd pair of shoes from the Endorphin line. I have the Speed 3, Pro 4, and Rift.
I love the midsole, SpeedRoll, weight, look, basically everything. However, I get terrible rubbing and blisters on my achilles due to the way the heel is built. I’m actually surprised there aren’t more complaints about this. The heel curves in toward the achilles, and is a very rough material. Maybe this will change as they break in…I’ve only got around 30 miles in them, but I have to put bandages or moleskin on the back of my heels before each run or I will suffer.
That one flaw aside, these are one of the best, most agile shoes I’ve ever worn on technical trails.

Bought few weeks ago, I went out twice on different type of trails with those Rift and I really like them. Comfortable, very light and with good ankle support.
ASegal –
4 and a half stars would be more appropriate. GREAT shoe, but the best shoe is a different pair of Saucony’s I have! I officiate girls Lacrosse and the weight and cushion of this shoe is awesome. The only negative I have is with breaking them in the back of the shoe is a bit high and while working to break them in has caused blisters. Once fully broken in, they are the best shoes I have had for running up and down the field.

Solid trail runner. The shoe was unexpectedly light but still supportive. Saucony has always made comfortable runners.
The R –
I moved over from Nike running shoes to Saucony and never looked back. Im not thrilled with the fit for these shoes but will definitely use them on some flatter trail runs. In my opinion, not a racing shoe.
